Characteristics of Effective Learning (CoEL) - Face-to-Face
Unlocking how children learn, not just what they learn.
The Characteristics of Effective Learning (CoEL) are at the heart of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). They describe the attitudes, behaviours, and skills children need to thrive, from curiosity and persistence to creative thinking and problem-solving.
This focused course will give you a deep understanding of CoEL and how to nurture them in your setting, helping children to become confident, independent learners for life.
In this course, you will learn to
- Understand what the Characteristics of Effective Learning are and how they underpin the EYFS.
- Recognise why CoEL are so important for long-term development and school readiness.
-
Explore the three key areas:
- Playing and Exploring – engagement and curiosity.
- Active Learning – motivation, persistence, and resilience.
- Creating and Thinking Critically – problem-solving, reasoning, and making connections.
- Use real-life examples to identify and encourage these characteristics in daily practice.
Why it matters
When you know how a child learns best, you can adapt your approach to make learning more meaningful, engaging, and effective. CoEL is the bridge between a child’s interests and their ability to reach their full potential.
Who is it for?

- Nursery and preschool staff
- Childminders and teaching assistants
- Anyone delivering the EYFS
