Intent, Implementation, and Impact in Practice

This course supports early years professionals to develop a clear, purposeful curriculum and confidently understand the 3 Is — Intent, Implementation, and Impact — within an early years context.

The 3 Is are central to how curriculum quality is understood and discussed in early years settings. However, many practitioners find the language abstract or worry about “getting it right.” This course breaks the 3 Is down into clear, practical concepts, showing how they link to everyday practice, planning, and provision — without overcomplicating what effective early years education already does well.

What you’ll learn

  • What curriculum means in the early years — beyond planning sheets
  • A clear understanding of Intent, Implementation, and Impact
  • How to articulate your curriculum intent in a child-centred way
  • Turning intent into effective teaching, interactions, and environments
  • Understanding impact through observation, assessment, and reflection
  • How the 3 Is link to the EYFS, development matters, and inclusive practice
  • Communicating your curriculum clearly to staff, families, and inspectors

Who this course is for

  • Early years practitioners and educators
  • Room leaders and nursery managers
  • SENCOs and inclusion leads
  • Childminders
  • Anyone involved in curriculum design or review in early years settings

What makes this course different

  • Early years–specific and rooted in real practice
  • Practical, not performative — focused on what works for children
  • Clear and confidence-building, not inspection-led
  • Inclusive and child-centred, supporting all learners

Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the 3 Is clearly and confidently
  • Develop or refine a curriculum that reflects their setting and children
  • Show how daily practice aligns with curriculum intent
  • Understand and evidence impact without excessive paperwork

This course helps practitioners move from uncertainty to confidence, supporting you to create a curriculum that is coherent, meaningful, and responsive — and that truly supports children’s learning and development.
